There wasn't originally any "competing" at all.

Bryan Singer was working on a proper sequel series to the original
(ignoring "Galactica 1980"), but then had to pull out due ot other
committments. The management morons brought in Ron Moore and everything
was changed to the completely different new version that eventually aired
(although he continued to use some of the CGI material that Bryan Singer
had started).

Bryan Singer is supposedly still working on bringing "Battlestar
Galactica" to the movie screen, but he appears to have lost some of his
marbles since his first work on it. He's now saying that his version will
somehow fit "between" the original and Ron Moore's versions ... an
complete and utter impossiblity since they are both totally different and
separate versions of the same very basic story.
